Revised Eligibility Requirements for the IBLCE Exam - June 8
The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) Board of Directors has revised
the exam eligibility requirements for first-time certification candidates. These revisions include changes
in the amount and type of education that candidates must complete.
In addition to the required clinical experince in helping breastfeeding families, beginning in 2012,
all first-time candidates will be required to have completed:
* 90 contact hours of pre-exam education in human lactation and breastfeeding and meet
ONE of the following requirements:
> Be a registered/licensed/recognized health professional in their country
> Have completed higher education in 14 indentified subjects
Educators play a key role in helping prospective IBCLCs reach their goal. IBLCE does not offer and
does not accredit pre-certification education for IBCLCs. Educational programs and courses designed
for prospective IBCLCs are in high demand.
IBLCE encourages educators to seek accreditation or approval of their educational activities.
The Approval and Accreditation Committee (AARC) on Education in Human Lactation and Breastfeeding
has developed standards for pre-certificaiton education for lactation consultants. IBLCE encourages
educators to seek AARC approval or accreditation.
